Galinda starts off the section by announcing that she is a changed person. She also goes in to detail about her friendships and how those relationships are changing. The most important piece of information that she gives the reader is; some background information about the past couple years of Elphie’s life. These are the years that were skipped over during the previous chapters.
Elphie explains where her sister was born - Colwen Ground, and she was born in a time of extreme drought. The drought was finished once a sacrifice was given to the lords. This ends up being, none other than Turtle Heart. The reader also learns that Melena died after giving birth to a third child. A boy named Shell. Elphie thinks that this is after Turtle Heart. She also speaks of people mining for rubies. Hmm… Foreshadowing…? Glinda keeps her on track of the family story. Elphie claims that Nessa is her fathers favourite. She also hints that Shell is not physically deformed. “Male, and white, and whole,” (Maguire 135)
Glinda has begun taking her sorcery course, diving into the lessons, and practicing. While discussing the topic of her sorcery teacher with Nessa and Elphie, she learns that Nessa is very religious and offended when Elphie refers to her religion as “I’m atheist and an aspiritualist.” (Maguire 138)
