To start this chapter off, Boq has lost his crush on Glinda. Finally! Everyone knew that she did not reciprocate the feelings he had for her. Grommetik was sent by M. Morrible to fetch Elphie and Nessa. They have received a note and package from their father. The note says; “I bought these shoes for you Nessa, and added some sparkle to them just for you. I love you.” (Maguire 148) There was nothing in the note or package for Elphie. Is Frex playing Favourites? The shoes a red. Hmm…? The Wicked Witch of the East from the movie had red shoes…?
A Circle has formed containing Elphie, the Thropp sisters, Crope and Tibbett, Avaric, sometimes Pfannee, Shenshen and Milla, and the new Vinkus kid, Fiyero. The reader learns that Fiyero is already married. People in Vinkus tend to do so. He has not yet moved in with her.
Nessa lets it slip that Elphie can sing, and she is pressured into doing so, by the group. Indeed she has a good voice. Well as far as one could tell from the descriptive words used. After she finishes, Nessa makes a reference to religion, and how Elphie believes in the afterlife.
